Taking Care Of Your Guitar
Guitars have become among the most popular musical instruments and the easiest to learn, too. In most cases, guitars are made of wood, making them highly susceptible to damage-causing elements in the environment. Keep these tips in mind to keep your guitar looking and working good all year round and beyond.
* Note that guitars are best stored in room temperature. Abrupt temperature changes cracks its finish or even more seriously, the guitar wood. Under low humidity or when exposed to radiators, heat or air vents, the guitar wood easily cracks or dries out. In the same manner, consistent humidity dampens and swells the wood causing it to reshape as a result. Guitars should not be continuously exposed to direct sunlight, either. There are humidifiers for guitar cases that are available in music stores. Some popular guitar makers include a humidifier set that also gives a de-humidifying effect.
* For guitars in their cases that have been previously exposed under extreme weather, like having been left in the car during the scorching summer or freezing winter, give it at least one hour before opening the case. It may be often overlooked, but basements, garages, and attics are not good storage places for guitars.
* Store the guitar where it properly belongs, its case. Keeping your guitar in quality cases protects it from often unavoidable bangs, mishaps and bumps. Also, the case protects the guitar from changing or improper shaping due to rapid temperature changes. The case may be coupled with guitar humidifiers that stabilize the guitar's moisture content. These guitar cases are made up of various price selections that come between some dollars and a few hundreds. Depending on the type of guitar you own, you may select your best cases. The options include canvas-created cases that are used to protect the instrument from the weather and hard shell cases that essentially offer your guitar a safe place. For guitars that are uniquely or uncommonly shaped, like the Flying V guitar for example, customized cases should be considered. It is best to ask the manufacturer about it. Road and aluminum cases fit professional musicians best because of their touring and flying for performances in various cities and states. As one guitar guru has said, you can be worry-free when your guitar is left in the car trunk during a hot summer day if it is stored in the cases that provide them with the best guitar protection.
* Clean your guitar properly. Wipe fingerprints as well as other marks or dirt off the guitar to keep it clean and shiny. Soft cloth made of microfiber should be used when wiping the guitar polish to make it squeaky clean. Guitar polish products remove grimes, but more importantly, they keep the wood in top condition. Other products are also available for string and fretboard polishing and cleaning.
* Leaning the guitar against a wall or similar surface for a long time is a no-no. Also, replace the strings at once when they need to be.
While the guitar is definitely stronger than it looks, it pays to always keep them in best condition. After all, they give melodies to songs that touch lives!
