• Learn how to strum – The strumming technique is actually something that can be quite difficult to master. Whether you are using your thumb, a pick or the end of your thumbnail, you should be able to strum the guitar professionally so that you get the sound that you want.
You can strum hard or soft depending on what kind of effect you want to come of the guitar. Learn how to strum and how to change your strumming style (as well as the weight of your strumming) so that you can transition between notes with expert timing and technique.
• Learn the basic chords – This really goes without saying that one of the best things to do if you want to play the guitar is to start from the very beginning. There are a few notes that you should know about and you should know how to play them before you get into anything deeper and more complicated. After all, the basic notes are in every song. It's what you put in between the notes that pose a challenge.
You will be surprised to know that you can write your own songs just playing with basic chords. In fact, there are many famous songs that are played with just the basic notes of A, B, C, D, E, F or G.
• Know your skill – Now, before learning how to play a guitar and honing those skills, first determine what you are. Are you a first-time player? An amateur? Or a professional who is looking to brush up his skills? Of course, it is said that you never forget how to play once you learn how to do it. Still, you should know your place so that you know exactly what to learn when it comes to guitar playing.
